Bulgaria's EU Entry Date Announced on September 26
Date: 20-09-2006
The European Commission will propose the date for Bulgaria's accession to the EU in its report of September 26 and specify possible "accompanying measures", said Michael Leigh, the Commission Enlargement Director General at the sitting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee Bulgaria - EU, reported "Bulgaria in EU" press office. His statement dispelled doubts that the date would not be known before EU summit in December.
The press office reports that Michael Leigh used the phrasing "accompanying measures" preferred by Bulgaria rather than "safeguard clauses". Bulgaria's Foreign Minister Ivailo Kalfin, Minister of European Affairs Meglena Kuneva, Interior Minister Rumen Petkov and Minister of Agriculture Nihat Kabil took part in the Committee's sitting.
